2020 Dia de los Muertos Observance

The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is encouraging community members to safely observe the annual Dia de los Muertos holiday with the help of social media. Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a day set aside to honor the memory of departed loved ones.

As part of a virtual celebration, every Monday, beginning October 12th through November 9th, information highlighting the traditions and customs of the holiday and ideas on how to celebrate, will be posted on Facebook @smrecandparks and Instagram @santamaria_recandparks. The informational posts will include educational segments on Day of the Dead elements, recipes for traditional food items, and instructional videos on designing altars, face painting, sugar skulls, and other crafts.

Free Dia de los Muertos activity kits are available to reserve online starting Monday, October 19th at www.cityofsantamaria.org/register using activity # 9622.

Community members are also encouraged to create a colorful altar (ofrenda) to honor a departed family member or friend in the Dia de los Muertos tradition. Individuals are invited to send in pictures of their altars to be included in an online slide show.  Photos of altars may be sent to rpinfo@cityofsantamaria.org with the understanding they will be shared on social media. Deadline to submit pictures for the slideshow is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3rd.

Questions may be directed to the Recreation and Parks Department at (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
