Active Aging Week Scheduled October 3-9

The City of Santa Maria Active Aging Committee, in collaboration with the International Council on Active Aging, has designated Saturday, October 3rd through Friday, October  9th as Active Aging Week.

The Active Aging Committee is made up of local agencies who work with City staff members year-round to promote healthy living for adults over the age of 50.

Free activities are being held each day throughout the week.  Recreation and Parks Department staff are coordinating virtual activities with collaborative agencies including People for Leisure and Youth, Inc., Santa Maria Valley Senior Citizens Club, Marian Regional Medical Center, and the Santa Maria Fire Department, to teach active adults the importance of maintaining quality of life through physical and social activities.

The theme is encouraging seniors to stay connected by finding safe, meaningful, and enjoyable activities that lift their spirits and help them maintain an active lifestyle.

A detailed list of the Active Aging Week activities is available online at www.cityofsantamaria.org/activeaging. Questions may be directed to the Recreation and Parks Department, (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.

This is the City’s eleventh year hosting the weeklong observance that celebrates active aging adults as fully participating members of society and promotes the benefits of leading an active, healthier lifestyle. The City of Santa Maria won the Spirit Award for its 2019 Active Aging Week programming. This honor was given by the International Council on Active Aging to only 10 agencies from throughout six countries
