Call for Student art for Children’s Book

The City of Recreation and Parks Department, The People for Leisure and Youth, Inc. (PLAY, Inc.) and the 2020 Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Program Class are partnering to help publish a bilingual children’s book about the Santa Maria Valley.

Proceeds from the sale of the book will support Northern Santa Barbara County United Ways’ literacy programs in Santa Maria, Orcutt, and Guadalupe, as well as recreational art programming for Santa Maria youth at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center.

The co-authored bilingual children’s book is titled Strawberry Moon Says, Goodnight.  Illustrations to depict the book’s verses will be selected from student submissions to an art contest.

Santa Maria Valley students in grades 4 through 12 may drop off their artwork at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, or at any Santa Maria Mechanics Bank, or at the Community Bank of Santa Maria no later than Friday, September 25th.

Illustration templates and supplies may be picked up at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, located at 600 South McClelland Street, beginning Monday, May 4th, while supplies last.

Questions regarding this important community legacy project may be directed to the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department at (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
