    Free Cultural Experiences for Teens

The City of Santa Maria Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety is coordinating two cultural experiences to Santa Barbara for teens in grades 7 through 12 during the month of August. Pre-registration is required.

First, an excursion to the Old Spanish Days Fiesta in Santa Barbara will take place on Wednesday, August 3rd. The teens will enjoy the carnival and cultural festivities at the Mercado del Norte, including ballet and flamenco performances, live music, and rides.

On Wednesday, August 10th, the teens will explore the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The museum has a collection of more than 27,000 pieces of American, Asian, and European art spanning over 5,000 years of history.

Transportation will be provided for each activity from the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, located at 600 South McClelland Street. The shuttles will depart from the youth center at 10:00 a.m. and return at 3:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required at www.cityofsantamaria.org/register, as space is limited.

The excursions are a part of the Something Fun series, designed to provide teens with experiences they may not otherwise partake in due to economic and transportation barriers. In partnership with the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, the Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety offers resources and programs to youth to deter their involvement in criminal activity, drug use, and gangs. Efforts include granting free bus passes to teens, organizing field trips, promoting the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center as a safe place, and offering job exploration, leadership, and employment opportunities.

Questions may be directed to the Recreation and Parks Department at (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
