    Independence Day Activities

In the interest of promoting public health through social distancing – and facing fund-raising challenges – this year’s community fireworks show in Santa Maria is cancelled. The City is exploring an alternative event without pyrotechnics.

Many fireworks shows in the region are cancelled. The impact of COVID-19 has already caused the cancellation or postponement of many other Santa Maria events including the annual Elks Rodeo, the Strawberry Festival, and more.

The City recognizes the inability to this year rely upon raising $35,000 in donations for the pyrotechnics show from businesses because of financial impacts. During this extraordinary time, funds are better directed to aiding the community.

Sale of “Safe and Sane” fireworks from local, City-registered booths will continue to be allowed, beginning at 12:00 noon on Sunday, June 28th. Groups that applied to be eligible for a permit to sell fireworks in January, must submit the completed paperwork to the City Fire Department by Thursday, June 4th.

The 12-hour period on the Fourth of July from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. is the only time “Safe and Sane” fireworks may be used within the City Limits.

Anyone caught using any fireworks on other days will be subject to a $1,000 fine.

The Police Department will be on the lookout for illegal fireworks.

The City has an illegal fireworks hotline of 925-0951 extension 3473 (FIRE).

Questions may be directed to the Public Information Manager at (805) 925-0951 extension 2372.
