Local History Series, “Heart of the Valley” on February 15th

The City of Santa Maria Public Library is pleased to offer a free local history series, “Heart of the Valley” on the third Saturday of each month. The next series will be held in the Library’s Shepard Hall on Saturday, February 15th at 10:15 a.m.

Thanks to a partnership with local historian Shirley Contreras, the monthly series will feature an expert speaker talking about various aspects of Santa Maria Valley History.

The speaker for February will be local family historian, Sandy Peterson, presenting “Connecting the Italian-Swiss Families of Our Central Coast.” Ms. Peterson will share the story of Midge Buchert, and her experiences tracking down long-lost ancestors of many Italian-Swiss families living on the Central Coast. Her story, told interview-style, is both inspiring and fascinating, and not just for those interested in searching for their roots.

The series is designed to educate and delight the public with interesting facts from the past that have shaped Santa Maria and other local areas in the valley. Suggestions for possible speakers are welcomed and encouraged.

The Library’s hours are 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. The Library is located at 421 South McClelland Street.

Seating is limited and is offered on a first come, first served basis.

Questions may be directed to the Library’s Information Desk, (805) 925-0994 extension 8562.
