Paul Nelson Aquatic Center Pool Renovation

The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department will be leading an improvement project for the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center, 600 South McClelland Street. With an estimated 75,000 people using the aquatic center every year, a renovation is needed to continue meeting the growing needs of the community.

Renovations to the pool are scheduled to begin the afternoon of Saturday, January 11th and will cause the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center to be closed until Wednesday, April 1st.

Community Development Block Grant funds in the amount of $779,055 have been directed by the City Council to the project. Work will reconstruct the plaster surface of the pool, update the pool to industry standards, and replace parts of the pool deck.

To avoid long-term closures, the Olympic-size pool has been patched several times over the years, however, a full resurfacing project has not occurred since the last major renovation in 1997.

Paul Nelson Aquatic Center card-holding patrons with monthly and yearly passes will be allowed to swim at the YMCA at 3400 Skyway Drive in Santa Maria.

Questions may be directed to the Recreation and Parks Department, (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
