Santa Maria Gears Up for the November Election

The nomination period for candidates to appear on the November 8th election ballot for the Santa Maria City Council begins Monday, July 18th and runs until Friday, August 12th.  One seat in District 3 (southwest) and District 4 (southeast) will be up for election for terms of four years each.

Individuals interested in becoming a candidate may obtain and file nomination papers with the City Clerk’s Office during that time. Please contact the City Clerk’s Office at (805) 925-0951 extension 2307 to make an appointment to receive a candidate orientation and pull nomination papers.

To run for a local office, a candidate must be at least 18 years of age on Election Day and be a registered voter of the City of Santa Maria.  The City Council candidate must be “nominated” by 20 registered voters in the Council District in which the candidate is living as a City resident. Information about District Elections is online at www.cityofsantamaria.org/districtelections.

The Clerk’s Office would like to remind candidates to collect more than the minimum 20 signatures required (there is room for 30 signatures) in case some are invalid, and to not wait until the last minute to file. Should an incumbent not run for re-election, the nomination period will be extended by five days to August 17th for the District candidates only where the incumbent did not file.  There is no fee to run for office in Santa Maria.

Voting is a privilege and registering to vote is easy as 1-2-3.  Voter registration forms are available at City Hall, the City Clerk’s Office, and at the County Elections office (addresses below). Postage is prepaid on the registration forms.  Residents may register to vote at any time throughout the year and must register before Monday, October 24th to vote in the November election.
