The Patch Santa Maria - Preparing For 2020 Pumpkin Season

“The Patch” Santa Maria will return for a third season to Santa Maria. In the last two years, The Patch has provided free agricultural education programs for more than 300 local high school students, raised nearly $200,000 dollars for the community, and awarded over $30,000 in scholarships to participating students.

As The Patch plans to return this fall, the team is ready to begin the first step of production known as transplanting. On Saturday, May 23rd, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Patch students will visit Plantel Nurseries to learn more about the transplanting process while gaining hands-on experience preparing over 10,000 pumpkin transplants.

In efforts to provide an uplifting resource and opportunity for the community during this time of uncertainty, The Patch students will be offering a variety of free vegetable transplants to local families via multiple “drive-thru” locations throughout Santa Maria and Orcutt on Saturday, June 6th. Additional information regarding free local transplant distribution to be shared soon.

The Patch is partnered with the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department and Betteravia Farms. Transplants and nursery services donated by Plantel Nurseries, located 3990 Foxen Canyon Road.

The Patch is a public/private partnership whose purpose is to provide free, hands-on, career-based agricultural production education experiences for high school students. Guidance is provided by public and private employees on City-donated land at Los Flores Ranch Park.
