    Youth and Adult Recreational Sports

Limited competitive sports are allowed at City of Santa Maria parks while the County remains in the red tier during the pandemic, and additional activities will resume only when the orange tier is achieved.

COVID-19 continues to pose a risk and requires all people in Santa Maria to follow precautions. These requirements apply to all organized youth and adult sports and recreation community-sponsored programs, privately organized clubs and leagues, and adult recreational sports.

The State of California Department of Public Health has provided a list of sports eligible to play by tier.  Santa Barbara County is currently in the Red Tier which allows for outdoor low-contact sports and outdoor moderate-contact sports.  The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is required to uphold these mandates for the use of parks and field spaces for sporting activities.

“The Recreation and Parks Department continues working with sports organizations, both adult and youth, to help prepare them for getting back on the field as soon as is allowed,” Recreation Services Manager Dennis Smitherman said. “The County needs to be in the next tier, moderate-orange, to get some of the most popular sports such as soccer and basketball back up and running.”
