    The City of Santa Maria is seeking an individual experienced in municipal law to serve as its City Attorney. This at-will position is appointed by and reports to the City Council.     Knowledge of and experience in all facets of municipal law and related State and Federal law are essential. Experience in land use law is important in this charter city’s growing environment. The vacancy is a result of a retirement of an employee with 16 years of service to the City.

    The ideal candidate will be customer service-focused, a self-starter, experienced at providing legal counsel on matters related to civil litigation, municipal law, land use (CEQA), employment law, have experience serving public sector organizations, and be an active member with the California State Bar. Also, he/she will be an outstanding leader, a superior communicator, a business partner, relationship builder, mentor, be responsive and informed, and can effectively manage outside counsel and lead internal staff.
     
    The City Attorney’s Office provides a wide range of legal services for the City Council, City boards and commissions, and all 10 operating departments. Code Compliance activities are also operated out of the City Attorney’s Office, which has an overall staff of 12 and an operating budget of $1.5 million.
