City of Santa Maria Announces Appointment of City Attorney

After a competitive recruitment, Mayor Alice Patino announced today the appointment of Thomas T. Watson as the new City Attorney, replacing Gilbert “Gil” Trujillo who retired in December 2018.

The City Council is scheduled to approve Mr. Watson’s employment contract at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 7th. The City Council’s powers include appointing the City Manager and City Attorney. Mr. Watson is scheduled to report to work on Monday, June 17th.

“Thomas comes to us highly recommended by his co-workers and his peers in the legal profession,” Mayor Patino said.  “I have confidence in his abilities to manage and lead the City Attorney’s Office for years to come.  I look forward to him effectively managing the legal needs of our City.”

The City Council was seeking a great leader who is responsive and informed with a customer service focus, with strong communication skills, seasoned in civil litigation, municipal law, land use, and who will continue to build a strong City Attorney team.
