Interactive Recycling Exhibit Unveiled at Discovery Museum

The City of Santa Maria Utilities Department and the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum unveiled a new interactive exhibit at the museum on Thursday, January 17th, 2019. The new exhibit, “The Great Recycling Story,” showcases the path from plastic to recycled product.

Designed for children aged four years and up, the educational display challenges participants to use all their senses to learn about recycling. The unique exhibit features a question and answer counter, infrared wands to “take aim” at targets to animate the displays, and more.

Executive Director Nancy Gastelum said, “We are thrilled to be able to offer this
hands-on interactive exhibit to our visitors. Learning to take care of our environment is important in sustaining our planet and the many natural resources we enjoy every day. Helping children understand this at an early age enables them to learn to make choices that protect these resources and ensures that they are available for future generations. We are grateful to the City of Santa Maria for enabling us to bring this important exhibit to our community.”

The Utilities Department funded this custom display via a Cal-Recycle grant, and it is the third learning experience provided by the department at the museum. Others have included an interactive recycling kiosk and an educational exhibit related to stormwater.

Director of Utilities Shad Springer said, “The City is pleased to be able to once again partner with the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum to advance an idea from concept to reality. We are proud of this exhibit because it creates a new opportunity for children to learn about recycling through engagement and interaction. This helps drive home the importance of recycling in a fun and different way.”
