  • Marian Regional Medical Center Recognized by American College of Cardiology with Electrophysiology Accreditation

Electrophysiology is the science of diagnosing and treating the electrical activities of the heart, or heart rhythm disorders.

Santa Maria, CA - May 27, 2021 – Marian Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce that the American College of Cardiology has recognized the hospital for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients who come to an electrophysiology (EP) lab for care. Marian Regional Medical Center was awarded Electrophysiology Accreditation based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who come to the EP lab.

Electrophysiology labs provide care for patients with arrhythmias, and may employ treatments such as cardiac ablation and implantable devices such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators.

“Marian Regional Medical Center has demonstrated its commitment to providing The California Central Coast with excellent heart care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, FACC, chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board. “ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award Marian Regional Medical Center with Electrophysiology Accreditation.”

Hospitals receiving Electrophysiology Accreditation from the ACC must take part in a multi-faceted clinical process that involves: completing a gap analysis; examining variances of care; developing an action plan; a rigorous onsite review; and monitoring for sustained success. Improved methods and strategies of caring for patients include streamlining processes, implementing guidelines and standards, and adopting best practices in the precise care of EP lab patients. Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to better patient education, improved patient outcomes, and more effective and efficient disease control.

“We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment, as it is a testament to the level of care and the service we provide to our community members,” says Marian Regional Medical Center President and CEO, Sue Andersen. “As one of the top-rated cardiac hospitals in the country with a proven record of excellence in cardiac care, we are committed to providing safe and innovative cardiac care services.”

Brett Gidney, M.D, serves as Marian's Regional Medical Director of EP services, and has been providing cardiac care on the Central Coast since 2012. His leadership and contributions to the EP program were integral in the attainment of this accreditation.

The ACC offers U.S. and international hospitals like Marian Regional Medical Center access to a comprehensive suite of cardiac accreditation services designed to optimize patient outcomes and improve hospital financial performance. These services are focused on all aspects of cardiac care, including the EP lab.
