    National Parks and Recreation Month

The California Park and Recreation Society has launched a statewide public awareness campaign as part of National Parks and Recreation Month which happens every July. The “Parks Make Life Better!” outreach effort is designed to inform residents of the many benefits of utilizing parks, facilities, programs, and recreation services.

In partnership with the campaign, the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department was selected to join 20 other California communities in an initiative sponsored by Agents of Discovery® to raise the status of parks and recreation as an essential community service. Agents of Discovery® is an educational platform that allows City staff to create, edit, and publish an augmented reality, interactive game that engages visitors who spend time in a specific park.

The Agents of Discovery game in Santa Maria is available during the month of July at Buena Vista Park, located at 800 South Pine Street. The game encourages young explorers, or “Agents”, to visit the park to earn real-life rewards. Community members can participate in the campaign by downloading the Agents of Discovery® mobile app to access a free “Mission” containing several challenge questions about the park history and other environmental topics.

As the oldest City Park, this new digital game brings a high-tech feature to Buena Vista Park which is a historic City landmark. By becoming Agents of Discovery®, both parents and children can use digital tools to have a fun, safe, learning experience in the great outdoors. Parks truly do make life better.

Questions may be directed to the Recreation and Parks Department, (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
