    Special Olympics Transition

After more than 40 years as the direct sponsor of Special Olympics in the Santa Maria Valley, the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department will make way for the development of a fully volunteer-based Special Olympics program.  Thursday, July 1st will kick off a transition plan to establish a volunteer network aimed at coordinating the sports and training programs offered in the community.  The local Santa Maria program will be supported by the Special Olympic staff members operating out of the San Luis Obispo Special Olympics Southern California office.
“Special Olympics Southern California has developed a new business model that will solicit local community volunteers to lead local Special Olympics movements across southern California,” said Alex Posada, Recreation and Parks Director and a member of the Board of Directors for Special Olympics Southern California.
The Recreation and Parks Department will provide a supportive role, continuing in a relationship that provides access to City facilities and logistical support.
“The success of a local Special Olympics program continues to be our goal,” Posada said. “I have personally spent most of my professional career working directly with the local Special Olympic athletes and their families; as well as the hundreds of volunteers involved in coaching, training, and fundraising for our athletes.”
Questions about the transition can be directed to the Recreation and Parks Department, (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
