    Utilities Department Celebrates Earth Day

The City of Santa Maria Utilities Department is holding two special events to celebrate “Earth Day.”

On Saturday, April 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Utilities Department will hold a free Recycle Bin Distribution Event to promote household recycling. The event will feature no-contact pickup, and be held at the Recycling Park at the Santa Maria Regional Landfill, 2065 East Main Street. To ensure safe traffic flow on site, access to the distribution booth will only be possible after entering the Landfill site via the Scalehouse.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the Recycling Park (dropping off recyclable materials) before stopping at the distribution booth to pick up their free indoor recycling bins. Residents may select from an 18-gallon container or a 6-gallon container with handle. (Limit two of any combination, while supplies last). Both containers are ideal for recycling paper, magazines, cans, glass, and cardboard, and easily fit in a pantry or garage due to their convenient size.

In addition, on Sunday, April 25th, patrons visiting the Santa Maria Regional Landfill will receive recycled-material promotional items when they arrive at the Scalehouse.

The 50-year-old Earth Day event is held annually on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
Questions may be directed to the Utilities Department at (805) 925-0951 extension 7270.
