Water Colors 2021 Storm Drain Mural Project

The City of Santa Maria Utilities Department and Recreation and Parks Department are seeking artists to design and paint sidewalk murals at five storm drains.  This project is part of the City’s education and outreach efforts to raise awareness about the negative effects of water pollution.

“While providing a unique canvas, the juxtaposition of education and public art, will remind our community about the need of protecting the City’s water systems while creating poignant masterpieces,” said Dennis Smitherman, Recreation Services Manager.

Design proposals are due by midnight, Sunday, May 30th.  Each proposal should include artwork that includes a message supporting water quality initiatives.  The five winning artists will be selected by a panel of judges.  Each winner will receive a $250 stipend for their work and a supply reimbursement of up to $150.  In addition, photographs of the art will be displayed on the City of Santa Maria public art tour webpage at www.cityofsantamaria.org/art and other print and electronic media sources.

Download the official “Call for Artist” information packet as well as an application and storm drain design template at the City’s website www.cityofsantamaria.org/recreation.

Questions may be directed to the Recreation and Parks office, (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
